Adding Better Batteries / Possibly Solar

Good post. The 1st thing you need to do is get some real deep cycle batteries and get away from the hybrid marine batteries. 6V batteries are cheaper per Ah than 12V, and have a slight weight ratio advantage over comparable 12V deep cycle. If you go the cheap route like the Energizer GC-2's vs...

    Transfer switch issues

Check the wiring connections in the J-box, outside the generator. There has been an issue with loose wiring in the past. Mine was the possible culprit for 2 failed transfer switches.

    Is this a charger?

How many 8 track tapes do you have? A friend of mine still has some of the ones we listened to when we were in high school. I had my player mounted in the glove compartment of my '69 F250. Couldn't mount it below dash because of the aftermarket air. LOL. Sorry, back on topic. I had to ask the...

    Inverter Install Question

I am speakeing of an inverter / charger. It also replaces your current converter to charge your batteries. When you are plugged into shore power, the AC from the 30A breaker passes through the inverter and feeds the sub panel. The inverter becomes a converter and charges the batteries, using...

    Inverter Install Question

He is talking about the electrical pedestal for shore power. Running wiring the length of the coach is always a challenge unless you go outside along the frame. You already have wiring going back there. You could accomplish the same thing using the existing wiring, with an inverter that has a...

    Inverter Install Question

The simple solution is to run an extension cord to the TV. The next is to wire a dedicated receptacle. This is what I did for the wine fridge. I went straight up from the basement into the space behind the bedroom drawers. I installed the receptacle on the side of the drawers toward the stairs...

    New 2015 Cyclone 4100 king

I pulled my 4100 with a Chevy the 1st 3500 mi, then a Ford the last 14K mi. They both seemed to squat equally. I put Timbrens on the Chevy. They stopped the squat but I hated them. I put Firestones on the Ford and loved them. I wanted my headlights pointing the same place whether loaded or unloaded.

Mexico???? The Country, not the New state.

I have driven across the Yucatan Peninsula, through the jungle from Talum to the Gulf side to Holbox to see the whale sharks. That was in 2005 because we had to leave Holbox due to Katrina entering the Gulf of Mexico. With that said, I don't think I would drive my RV into Mexico. Maybe in a...

Austin, TX to Black Hills, South Dakota

10-4. Depending on your starting point in Austin, it may be longer. When we go to MO, we take 281 to south of Jacksboro, then US 380 east toward Denton to pick up I-35. It's easy for us from Spicewood since 281 is only about 10 mi to the west of us.

    Shurflo 5.7 replacement

My ShurFlo 5.7 went out under warranty. It was replaced by the 4048, which was very loud. On our current RV, it has an optional upgrade water pump. It is an Aquajet ES. We are very happy with it.

    Diesel Fuel Additive

We use the Motorcrat Cetane Booster in our company vehicles as well as personal vehicles. It is more to create a paper trail than to enhance performance. I don't see any performance advantages.

Austin, TX to Black Hills, South Dakota

Chris, I avoid I-35 like the plague. If your are going through Wichita Falls, I strongly suggest US 281, unless you have to be in DFW for some reason. Coffee Creek RV Park is on the right just past I-20, and is a nice place to stay, and a HOC host park as well. We only live a few miles from 281...

    Portable Sewer Tank

I have a 25 gal Tote N Store. Seems pretty rugged. I have only used it a couple times but just one time paid for itself, as opposed to packing up to go dump. I have only used it for gray bath water, not black or galley water.

    Duel 6V Battery Venting

There is no "by far" unless you are comparing GC-2's with group 27 hybrid marine batteries. The disclaimer of "if one of them goes out" doesn't really seem to happen and if you have 4 or more, then it's a mute point. Here's the math Using the min@25A rating; 2 6V T-105's; 447 min / 122 lbs =...

    Duel 6V Battery Venting

225 @ 122 lbs, which yields a slightly higher Ah/lb rating than any of their 12V batteries. However, Ah ratings are a marketting tool. The better rating for deep cycle batteries is minutes @ 25A per weight per dollar. Here the 6V shine supreme.

    Duel 6V Battery Venting

How so? Trojav 6V's have the highest min@25A per lb. of any battery they sell. Plus, due to supply and demand, they are much cheaper per Ah.

    Duel 6V Battery Venting

I love it. I wish I had thought of that. Looks like 4 6V batteries, right? I added two 6V batteries in a box made for them, then later added two more in a duplicate box. I spliced two vent hoses together similar to what John did. Your setup is simple, cheap, and effective.

Replacing Tow Max on our Cyclone

RVDreaming. I took my 4100 immediately to Discount Tire before it's 1st trip out. I chose Michellin XPS Ribs because they are a commercial LT with full steel encasements. I went with 235/85's but if i had it to do over i would go with 245/75's which have the same weight rating with a smaller OD...

    Landmark window failures

From that BLOG, it is obvious that fogging is a wide-spread problem among all levels of RV's. It looks like it has created a a few burgeoning businesses. There is also one in Arkansas that gets good reviews as well. Our new rig had fogged windows and we negotiated their replacement in the...

    Running generator at night.

I ran my gas Onan 72 hours and 84 hours straight on two separate occasions, only shutting down to check oil and add fuel every 12 hours. I ran 1 AC most of the time except for a couple hours each evening for a rapid cool down after 105 degree days. It averaged 0.5 gph on both occasions. This...

Tow Max about to get next victim

245/75 16's have almost the same diameter of the Towmax. In the Michellin XPS Rib, it has the same weight capacity of the 235/85 16, which is 1.1" larger diameter. I chose the latter, but if I did it over again, I would use the 245/75 due to tire clearance. They were never a problem, it just...

Inverter Question on where power will be supplied

Jim, how does that tax credit work? Does the 30% come off your adjusted gross income or does it come off the amount of taxes you pay? I've never taken any type of tax credit before. Just found the answer to my own question. This is from Turbo Tax; Thanks for pointing this out.

Tow Max about to get next victim

Kosanko, the way I rationalizrd it to keep my sanity was; If the trailer came with high end tires, they (HL) were going to charge you as much or more than you can have them installed at Discount Tire or purchase and install from Tire Rack. That price could have been in optional equipment or...

Hitches are Heavy - How to Routinely Install/Remove????

I hope you understood that I was referring to the Ford OEM, which probably weighs 1/2 of that. There's no way i would be lifting 130 lbs by myself. I'm still paying for stunts like that. I do work construction, but from the seat of my pickup or my desk chair. Seriously, I had considered...

Hitches are Heavy - How to Routinely Install/Remove????

Holy cow. I removed/installed my OEM B&W many times by myself. Do they make a lighter version for the Ram? Do you really need a 25K hitch for your 5th wheel? The Ford OEM is 20K and it performed flawlessly for my 4100. I think I would do what someone suggested and leave it attached to the pin...

Yes. I called Heartland shortly after we purchased our 4100 and they confirmed that there are no schematic available. If you are smart enough to read a schematic, you will have no trouble figuring out the wiring on your 4100. Also, there is a lot of good diagrams here in the Heartland Owners...

Bearings/hubs preventive maintenance (PM). Horror story avoided!

I have to agree with Jim on this one. Jacking a wheel up 1" off the ground by placing the jack under the U-bolt is not going to bend anything. The manufacturers have to assume that we are all dummies and make blanket CYA statements such as this. There's no way I am going to jack up the whole...

I think your axles and spring assemblies came from Dexter. I know they were on my 2013 4100. When you call them, if you give them your VIN, they can send you an build sheet that shows all the part numbers of the springs, axles, brakes, and bearings.

RESOLVED: Onan 5500 battery connection not hooked up

Re: New delivery. Onan 5500 battery connection not hooked up. Mine was connected directly to the battery post. There was a red cable for the generator and one that supplied the 12v buss bar. Nice upgrade on the 6V batteries.
