We are in the planning stages of a trip to Yosemite next May. After visiting Yosemite are plan is to head West to the 101 and then take it North all the way to Northern Washington, Port Angeles / Sequim area before heading to the East. The plan is to go South to Tacoma and then head East working our way home through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska and then home to Texas.

Does anyone have any advice or experience driving Hwy 101 along the Pacific Coast? Is it a safe trip with a 56 foot Freightliner / 5th wheel combination?

Any advice about this route, things to see, places to stay etc. would be appreciated. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Hwy 101 north is a beautiful drive. Once you leave the SF bay area, it is mostly 2 lane road but well-traveled by RV's. Logging trucks make it, so you should have no problem. Northern California coast and Oregon coast are wonderful. Lots of nice RV parks all along the route. Would suggest stopping in Gold Beach, OR, for jet boat ride. Give us a shout when you get to Florence (right in the middle of the Oregon coast).

Should have mentioned that we took 101 around the outside of the Olympic Peninsula in July on our way to the Washington rally in Anacortes. Would highly recommend staying at Salt Creek Recreation Area just west of Port Angeles. Absolutely awesome views across the Straits of Juan de Fuca to Vancouver Island. Spacious campground with a few pull through spots, many large back-ins, water, electricity, and a dump station. It was the highlight of our trip.

Don't try to head west during the week, Monday - Friday from the hours of 4am to about 10am commute traffic can be a bear. Also stay away from CA HWY 1 it's a beautiful ride in a car but no fun in a long RV.

From San Francisco to Eureka the 101 is a long way from the coast. From Eureka on it is on the coast and can be slow and crowded depending on the time of week and time of day.

We did that from Yosemite North on 395 towards Reno, then 299 across to Eureka. Then From Eureka North on 101 thru Washington...

Ditto.

Just returned from a Crescent City, Brookings, Gold Beach triop. Going we took "The 5" North, then cut-over to 101 by way of 199...no problems and beautiful. Came back on 299...nice road, but the winding road along the river got a bit old after a while.
A trip back won't be too soon.
