12V Compressors

What are folks using for 12V compressors to maintain their tires, etc. I don't want a 120V unit, but one that I can run off the battery or jump from the truck when I don't have shore power (or a genny) available. I'm not looking for a toy, either.

I bought a Black and Decker Air Station at Target for around $65 or so. Believe it or not, it gets the 614's to 110 PSI. Not the quickest unit but not the slowest I have used either. We carry a 110 compressor but I keep this for those "emergency" situations. I did have to make a 12v extension cord with battery clips as all the attached cords are very short!

I'm interested in mounting one under my truck bed to use with the air bags and my air horn. Bought a cheaper one for the air horn and it did not last. Need to get a new one for the bags now. I plan on running an airline to the rear bumper for taking care of tires in a emergency use situation. What brands have you used for this purpose and also where are they mounted on the truck?

This is where I went for my compressor and air horn. Jason is very knowledgeable about these products as that is all he sells.

The compressor and pressure switch are mounted behind my rear seat. tank is mounted under cab. I brought the quick disconnect out under the passenger door on the Ford.
On the Gmc I had it coming out right next to the rear license plate but it used to get packed full of mud.

I carry a 50' and a 25' air hose.

I bought mine on e-bay for around $25 and it can be plugged into 110 v or 12v. It has a pressure gauge and while it's certainly not the fastest air compressor I've used it does just fine inflating the air bags. Supposed to go to 120 psi but haven't tried that. It will inflat the tires but I rarely use it for that. Can't remember the name brand but if anyone is interested I'll go to the trailer and get it.

I use an old 12V air compressor that has a power cord that is long enough to use around the truck so I installed a remote 12V outlet near the tailgate and under the lip of the box so I can plug it in there. It work wells and increases my flexibility quite a bit.

Something just came up in my mind
What if a female trailer plug was installed on the compressor, it could just be plugged in the trailer plug on the truck.
These plugs can be bought faily cheap at WallyWorld.
Just need to use the Battery and ground circuit.
Or even better an adapter made.

For me, "not a toy" means it does NOT plug into a cigarette lighter. Look at the spec's on the Viair compressors. Mine draws 26A.

Exactly. I've browsed the Viair models, just didn't know who had one. Laurent's idea about using the trailer hitch plug may have merit, too.

Just ordered the 400P unit. The idea is to be able to service the 5th Airborne (being shipped), and top off my tires at the storage yard (or on the road) without dragging my 3-gallon nailer compressor around and having to borrow a generator from the FD.
