I am a newby here and have a question on hitches. I have a Curt 5th wheel hitch and would like to know from all you Fun RV'ers if you need to lube them and what would you use to do this?

Thanks in advance Dave

I have a B&W Companion and I use Mobil 1 to grease the fitting for side to side pivot and white lithium grease on the urethane bushings for front to back pivot.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum. You'll find there's a lot of useful information here along with a great bunch of people who are willing to share what they've learned along the way.

I don't have a Curt hitch, but in general, I like to follow the manufacturer's maintenance procedures. If you know the model # of your hitch, you can download the install sheet here. It'll tell you about lube and other maintenance procedures.

Other Curt Hitch owners will probably chime in as well.

I have a Curt and yes you you do have to grease.
There are three Zerks. One on each side and one on top.
I also spray lube any other parts that move.
My hitch is five years old, yours may be different.

Peace

I have a curt 20 and a trail air pin box driving a 2012 3500 silverado dually pulling a 2013 Landmark mesa. We are getting beat to death with the curt hitch, have tried 51 lbs in the trail air and 80lbs, there is no diffrence. Does anyone have play in the curt hitch that bounces you like no other. My 2cents.

You shouldn't have that much play. We have the Curt Q20 and pull with a 2007 F550 dually. Love the solid feel. Suggest you call the Curt distributor. They shipped us a replacement hitch no questions asked because of problems getting to the zerts for greasing. Replacement works better.

Where is the play in the Curt hitch?
It sounds more like you are getting beat up by good old fashioned chucking.

Peace
Dave

The play in the hitch is from the cuppling around the hitch pin is not closing all the way and has about a 1/4 in play. Attempted to attach a photo but unable.

Dear cdreamn,
We have the same Curt Q20 hitch and the part of the hitch that clasp around the pin overlap eachother. Your looks like something is bent or not assembled properly. I would not pull with that. We have to hook up this Wen. to take the rig to the dealer for some warranty work (imagine that, hahaha). I will take a photo then and send to you. In the mean time maybe you can contact Curt or a local hitch specialist to take a look at your hitch. Better get it checked out, better to be safe then sorry.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Although my jaws are slightly different, The space shown in between the jaws is about the same as mine.
I would suggest a call to Curt.

Thank you foryour suggestion; we have been doing a lot of research both the dealer thatinstalled the hitch (Portsmouth Trailer Supply) and I. Also I have personallychecked the physical connection with other hitches in the resort. I have theplastic hitch piece that held the grease plate, and put into three other stylehitches. In all three, none of the hitches had the movement that I have in thecurt hitch. This test was the best; it showed me the physical deficiency’s inthe curt hitch that I have. I have had so many suggestions by the dealer I feltthey were looking for an excuse. But I was impressed how the owner has beenchecking everything she could to make me happy. She is willing to replace thehitch with a new hitch of my choice and wants me to come to the place ofbusiness and check out a Resse hitch to replace it.
I was not real thrilled with the Resse Hitch but I am willing to try anything before dropping 1700 dollars on a new B&W hitch which was quoted by RV Solutions in Chesapeake, (Not that I would buy it from them).

I have to do something because we are getting beat to death.
Thanks again,

Great advise by all that posted. We did take it back to the dealer the 1st week we had the hitch and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Now after 30 days and returning it again and they did everything to find an excuse for the problem other than the hitch. They want to do anything they can to replace the hitch, but still will not admit it is a defective hitch. After showing the owner she agreed something was not right but "it just might be the fit your looking for". After a cool down period of dealing with this business I am disapointed that it took so long.

Thank you all for your help, so kind and informative.

We had a lot of chucking or movement from our Curt hitch but we reduced most of it by installing the MorRyde pin box. I know that the movement is chucking related because I could adjust it affects by increasing the amount of water I carried. The more water the less chucking but I really didn't want to haul around a full tank of water all the time.

The jaws on my Curt look the same as in the picture.

If I can add two cent to this discussion. The Mor-ryde pin boxes are adjustable by changing the rubber spring units. I would suspect that if with the Curt and Mor-ryde combination (which is what I have also) if your trailer happens to be on the lower end of the rating for the particular Mor-ryde you will see more chucking. I know that when we pulled our new trailer home from Iowa (with the same Mor-ryde pin box which we took off the old trailer) there was even less chucking than before. The only real difference between the two trialers was some 2k in gross weight. I've heard of others that had Mor-ryde swap out the rubber springs to change the operating range for the pin box. The additional weight seemed to make a difference in our unit. I know before the Mor-ryde pin box on the old trailer the chucking would almost make you sick going down the road.
