Baggage Door Gas Spring

Well this past weekend my gas spring locked up on the front baggage door and ripped out the bracket from the wall inside. I have ordered a new gas spring, but am trying to find a good solution on how to reattach the bracket to the wall. I could move it slightly but have done that once before so the entire area where I need to reattach to is just shreds of wood. I prefer not to replace the felt covered panel either, but may have to.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

What is on the other side of the panel? If it is open space, you can screw and glue a solid piece of wood and use longer screws to mount the gas spring. Another solution is, so long as the board is thick enough, drill out and epoxy a dowel into the hole. Both will fix the problem, but the wood needs to be thick enough to support he dowel.
