How about 3.5" wall protector item #30348 at lowes for $2.27. A little paint or stain and a faux wood grain done with a brush and your good as new. It will blend with door finish and if it ever happens again, the protector will take the hit which is designed to do.

Best idea yet. I watched a program on how to fake wood grain. A very light spray of the stain. Let it dry completely and then a heavy coat followed by a crumpled paper towel gently wiping across the surface. It was impressive and this part is cheep enough to purchase several to practice with.

Gus...Bones was on the right track. Both Home Debit and Lowes sell door skin panels. You can lift the glass molding off, cut the skin to fit, glue on the skin, stain and poly it. Then reinstall the molding. Skin can be cut with a utility knife.
