It's DARK in here..how about more skylights?

I wish there were a way to make the interior lighter. We have a wonderful skylight in our bathroom but the rest of the RV is dark; as in we have to turn on the lights during the day. It's a combination of awnings on the windows to keep the sun off, big patio awning, dark tinted windows and darkish wood cabinets. To make matters worse our furniture is brown leather.

It would be wonderful to add a skylight to the kitchen/living area to bring in some much needed night.

Sky lights will let more light in, but the added heat through them would require another AC. My belief is that the interiors are dark because it makes them look rich. A tarrific selling point. I have been in a few high end RV's much higher priced the the top end Landmarks and they are just as dark. A few have painted the wall paper to brighten the interior. Our friends ordered their Big Country eliminating the top cabinets on one wall and had almost sealing to almost floor windows. It is much brighter. I don't mind the darker interior with the lights on, but my wife would like it brighter.

Why don't you paint the cabinets? Skylights do let in more light, but also more heat. So, in a trailer where you're already keeping light out of the windows due to heat, you're exacerbating the heat problem.

The main reason we went with the Rushmore floor plan is that it has windows on 3 sides. And when the entry door is open, the light is wonderful. And the lighter cherry wood finish bounces the light.

Skylights are a huge risk for water leaks on the roof. They are great, but can be problematic. I agree it's dark in some models. Ours is the older, lighter "pecan" wood with light countertops and tan couch/chair. I like the looks of the dark brown couch/chairs and dark countertops, but could only imagine how dark it would be!

Also love all our Rushmore's windows. So many now have tv on side and no kitchen window- basically eliminating all light on OD side. We put Lexan in screen door so that adds more light.

Thanks for all the responses. We do have the lighter pecan wood cabinets, and if this were a 10 year old RV I wouldn't hesitate to paint them, but I'm afraid in an almost new RV it would ruin any resale value should we have to get rid of it. We did put lexan on our door which helps, no doubt.
Right now, we are hosting in Oregon and we are under the trees so it makes it even darker
We put our furniture from our house in our RV and will probably replace it in a few years and will definitely get tan upholstery. We replaced the table and chairs with a buttermilk finish wood set that helps too.
I realized after we bought it that when we looked this model at an RV show, every single light was on inside...now I know why!!

I want no skylights for all the reasons stated above. They are nothing but trouble.

We Snowbird in our Bighorn and I can tell you heating and cooling could be a problem with more skylights. I've yet to put insulation pillows in mine because we use the fantastic fan as a kitchen vent and the bathroom as a moisture vent when taking showers. We our fortunate that our colors are medium not dark.

Then again - We are trying to figure out how to make the bedroom "Vegas Casino Suite" blackout dark so we can sleep in...

We took down the day/night shades and got blackout shades. Works for us - and I (Martha) like to sleep in when I can.
