The Houston area is booming as is Austin. Austin is Texas' silicon valley. No state income tax in Texas either.

We do have some major lakes within 2-3 hour drive of Kansas City, MO, but the weather probably won't agree with you. It can get cold & snowy in the winter, & pretty hot & humid in the summer. But there is a company here, Cerner that deals with medical software that seems to always be looking for IT people. From what I understand the pay is real good & benefits are outstanding. Kansas City is their world headquarters, and they have several locations around KC.
