Actually if I'm reading it right it goes a step further and charges the batteries also. And then kicks in as an inverter when more AC is needed. Smart little bugger.

Yes, they a boosting inverter/chargers. They also have very high charge rates if your batteries are capable of taking very high charge rates. Li ion are capable of very high charge rates.
