Newport Dunes, CA

We just got our new Ashland on 12/10/2014. We are now scheduled to leave 12/21/2014 to take our maiden voyage to Newport Beach, CA and will be staying at Newport Dunes RV park. When I read the reviews on Trip Adviser and Good Sams they were all over the place. Has anyone stayed there and if yes what do you think of the RV park? Also will anyone be there between 12/22/2014 and 01/01/2014? If you are we would like to meet with you if you are open to it.

Thanks,

Fred

Fred, I have stayed their before and it's just OK. I find it very expensive for what you get. MHO, if you do not have a 500K bus...you are looked down upon by the locals.. For my $$$ I would stay at the RV park at the Pechanga Casino in Temecula before Newport Dunes. Cleaner, Casino to go to, pull through camp sites, shopping close by and the most important....nice people. All JMHO.

Bob,

Our kids and family live in LA and Long Beach so Newport Beach is a lot closer for them to visit. Also I use to live in Temecula (25 years ago) and do not want to fight I15 traffic. We have heard very nice things about the Pechanga RV park.

Thanks,

Fred

Fred, I have no idea why my post reads the way it does. The upper case junk is not there when I go to "edit post". I have no idea what
is. Anyway ..NO.... I would not go to Newport Dunes.

Pechanga is a nice park, but the drive from their on I-15, then 91 into LA & Long Beach would be terrible! Even over the mountain to get to I-5 would be a long drive. You might be better off looking in Orange County. I heard that the RV Park in Anaheim is either closed or closing. Even the California state parks all along the coast might be a better option, like Huntington Beach. Sort of midway between Newport and Long Beach.

Newport Dunes is really expensive and campers are packed in.

This is from a 3rd generation native Californian living in Michigan.

Enjoy your stay whatever your decision is.

Fred,
Congratulations on your new LM Ashland. It is a beautiful rig.

I have lived in Southern California for 55+ years. Any of the SoCal beach RV parks are going to be tight and expensive. Many folks though, are willing to pay and stay for the beach ambiance. That said, if Newport Dunes is close to family and friends just go for it. It is not like you are locking yourself into a lease for the next six months. I know some of my neighbors really enjoy it, although it is not really one of my favorites.

Our go-to park when not at our California home and visiting in SoCal is Prado Regional Park in Chino (Back Loop).
It seems somewhat rural, but is close to Long Beach and all of LA-south and Orange County.

Also, a little further south, San Clemente State Beach Park and San Onofre State Park (San Mateo Campground), are also nice parks, right off Interstate 5.

IMHO, Huntington State Beach (Bolsa Chica) would be a FAR WORSE choice than Newport Dunes. It is nothing more than a parking lot for $75 per night. Stay away, it's a zoo.

Whatever you decide, have fun, enjoy your stay and your new rig! PM me if you have any questions. We are in Orange County until May. Trace

Bob,

When reading your reply I though he calls himself "old cranky" so I though maybe you were just using some colorful language to get your point across. I agree it is not the best place to go but the family has overruled me (happen's a lot) so Newport Dunes it is. When we get back I will tell the forum all about our trip.

Thanks,

Fred

Fred, I know this may be a little too late, but you mentioned family in Long Beach and LA. There is an RV park in Long Beach near the Queen Mary and there is tons of stuff to do around there. I have not stayed there, so I can't say good or bad. Just another option.

Tried to book but nothing was available. Also they were not the nicest people in the world. Took two days to get back to me and their response was "can't help you". Their right about that for based on their response I don't want their help. Also if you read the reviews they have a big issue with customer service.

Isn't the annual big Escapees group bus trip to the Rose Parade staying at Newport Dunes? I believe that is where they have stayed in previous years.

BTW, I am staying at Thousand Trails Wilderness Lakes in Menifee (near Temecula), and they have had an annual Rose Parade bus trip the past 3 years. That's (Pasadena) where I will be early on New Years day.
