Progressive EMS PE-2 What could be the cause?

Mike, it could be because they no longer make the PT50C unit that we had. They sent us the new version. It's a little more compact and has the shield over the power plug to protect the cord/plug connection from water.

Hey Erika, I've go the PT50C and it is pretty old. Maybe it will die and I can get that new one too. I like that water shield.

Well, we had some more excitement today. We left on Friday to go to Winstar Casinofro the weekend. It was drizzling when we arrived, but soon turned into heavy, blowing rain, non-stop for almost 24 hours!

We had no issues at all with our stay, and when we left, it was again just misting.

We got home to our home park and plugged into our pedestal, and the EMS read E-4, low voltage. We watched it cycle, and yep, One leg was 88, the other was 234??? Whoa! We unplugged and disconnected the cord from the EMS, and plugged it in again. This time it gave E-6, another voltage error, but the legs were 88 and 107, and it said 9amps were being drawn! So we called the park manager. I then noticed there was condensation inside the led screen of the EMS. I took the EMS to another pedestal and tried it, only to find out the screen wouldn't light up at all at this point. So it appears to be compromised. The manager came and tests the pedestal, both legs read 123. We are using our Surgeguard backup again, till I can call Progressive Industries in Monday.

Sounds like PI has made changes to their warranties. About 5 years ago my portable 30A unit suffered water penetration. With their urging I mailed it off to them - about a week later it was returned. Then about 2 months later one of the pins on the plug physically pulled out of the plug head (most likely a poor connection/ heat damaged). Same story, they said send it in for repairs.

After that it worked just fine (retired two months ago); I'm now using PIs hard wired 50A system.

Talked to Progressive Industries tech support, they agreed water got into unit and that shouldn't happen. They said I have to file another warranty claim, and they will send a replacement unit to me.

Why don’t you just get a hardwired unit?

John, We've always had an external one -- originally with the Elkridge a Surgeguard. When it failed in the 100+ degree summer, we overnighted a new Progressive Industries EMS PT-50C so we could get the AC working (and rig protected) as soon as possible, and insurance covered the cost.

That was in 2015, and it just failed this August. Due to the lifetime warranty, they sent us their new model, PT-50X which has a weather shield over the plug, and is slightly smaller than the previous model.

I don't know if this was a new or refurbished model. It looked brand new. But sadly, it was not weather-tight -- at least not against 4-5" of rain in 24 hours.

Progressive Industries has already authorized a replacement.

For us, it's a combination of things. A portable unit is easy to install... just plug in; easy to use if you need to check your pedestal and others; easy to replace quickly if needed.

Just saying, my unit is almost 10 years old and hasn’t failed me yet. And it’s not that hard to install.

Each version has their pros and cons.

If others feel confident they can install the hardwired, just note that the Progressive Industries lifetime warranty only applies to professional installs only for the hardwired version.

Just an FYI... If you send them a picture of the installed unit, regardless of who installed it, and it looks like it was done correctly they will still honor the warranty. When my new one would not work they asked for a picture then sent me a new one.

Mine was "professionally" installed by the dealer. But they put it in an inaccessible spot, so I moved it to a location that would protect it from water leaks. Yes, I did have to disconnect and rewire it, but it was simple. I had enough "professional" work done on various things to warrant me learning how to do it myself to get it right.

I was just stating the warranty info I recently read. :)

I am sure hardwire install is an easy task for many. Some, not so much.

I was afraid after installing mine and it did not work then reading the fine print. I work on a lot of electronics/electrical for my day job so it was a no brainer for me to do the install myself. I freaked out when it did not work, asking a lot of questions thinking maybe I missed or forgot something. Then progressive assured me it was the data cable and that it was not a normal phone cable (Later I ohmed it out and it is a normal cable). They sent me a new cable and it still did not work. When they finally sent me a whole new unit it only took me a couple minutes to find the problem with the first one. Whoever makes their circuit boards did not seat one of the chips in all the way and it had fallen out and was sitting underneath the contactor . The chip was part of dual channel over voltage/surge protection circuit so even with the switch in bypass it still would not work since it would not allow the contactor to close.
