IT WILL void your warranty!! It is illegal in all 50 states to tamper with any emission equipment. In some jurisdictions, the shop working on it is suppose to report it, if and when non-compliance is discovered.
When traveling, if you should break down, and are not mechanically inclined, you may have a hard time finding a shop to work on it. Your relationship with your shop back home is nonexistent on the road.
