Wanted to inform others of the issues I’m having with the drawers and cabinet in our 2017 rear kitchen 3100CK. We bought the unit new this past June and have less than 3 thousand miles on it.
The drawer below the fridge was the first to fail. The staples that hold the luan bottom to back of the drawer pulled through the luan and the staples that hold the center support (piece of particle board) failed causing the center support board to fall and jam the drawer. I was able to remove the drawer and, using gorilla glue and L-brackets, repair and re-inforce it. A month later the drawer below the stove failed the same way and again I was able to remove and repair it.
Both of these drawers are much wider and deeper than the other 3 drawers under the countertop. Preferring to keep heavier item lower in the unit we were using the larger drawers below the fridge and stove for small pots and pans, cookie sheets, plastic cutting boards and such. But obviously these larger drawers weren’t built properly.
The next issue was the cabinet face above the stove that surrounds the microwave and an open storage area above the microwave (photo #1). The left side of this cabinet face was firmly attached to the upper corner cabinet, but the top and right side aren’t attached to anything. The bottom of this cabinet face had been stapled to 1 x ½ inch support board behind it. But almost all the staples had either missed the mark or were bent over, not penetrating the support board. This caused the top, right side and bottom of this cabinet face to come loose and move forward away from the frame.
After removing the microwave I was able to straighten the bent staples and, using a hack saw blade, cut them off. This provided a flush fit of the cabinet face to the support board. I then ran 4 screws through the cabinet face and into the support board. After replacing the microwave the screw heads and just barely visible (photo #2). The trim that runs across the top of this cabinet face had also fallen off and needed to be glued and tacked back in place. I did find another piece loose trim along the left side of the microwave which was being held in place with a single brad (photo #3)
There is nothing to attach the top of the cabinet face to as the back of the cabinet is 8 – 10 inches away from the back wall of the camper (dead space back there). As for the right side of the cabinet face I’m considering gluing a wood block to the back of it and then running a few screws through the left side of the open storage area above the fridge into the block.
I was tipped off to another issue by another 3100CK owner on this forum. The 3 drawer unit under the kitchen counter is built on a frame which is suspended from the bottom side of the counter top. This rear of this frame is held up by 2 screws run into the bottom of the counter top. His screws failed and the three drawer unit fell into the camp kitchen. I decided to check mine and found one of the 2 screws stripped. It’s tough to get at, but using a 90 degree drill adapter I was able to run 3, 1 ½ inch cabinet screws through the rear of the frame and into the bottom of the counter top.
Have to say I’m very disappointed with the quality of workmanship is this area of the camper. So far the rest of the unit seems solid.
