There are sections of it that no longer exist because the Interstate took it out. There are other sections that are like frontage roads along the Interstate that are not maintained. This is what I have observed in Arizonia and California. Do your homework. I am sure there are Route 66 travel guides to help you out and plan your stops and activities. I have only driven a little of it but not towing.
The last 3 months of Trailer Life magazine, March, April, and May, had a 3 part article describing Route 66 and traveling the road. It was very informative.
