Route 81 RV Campgrounds

We are in a 36ft class A RV trailing a car on US Route 81 from Harrisburg, Pa to Asheville, NC and would VERY MUCH appreciate easy access RV camps en route as we are pretty new to this and so far ended up in some scaryplaces.

If you don't have a Traile Life or a Woodall's book, get one ASAP. These will tell you about campgrounds in the various state. There are also many campgrounds that aren't listed(many aren't listing any more because of cost) that are very nice. We tend to not like campgrounds with a lot of permanents though many campgrounds now have separated the permanents from the overnighters.

I assume the highway you means is Interstate 81, there is no US 81. We stay in a Cg we like near Wythville, called Fort Chiswell. That is probably too far for you in one day. We don't have any others we stay in but most seem to be OK in VA along 81. As i said before, get a book until you learn your way around.

There is also a website called www.rvparkreviews.com that review parks across the country. Also, state vistor centers can sometimes be a help. We had one tell about a CG in TN that wasn't in any book. CG was OK but the restaurant was great!!!

Just remember, you are in your own home, all you need from the CG is electric.

LargeMarge - this is a great place to ask questions and get helpful informations.

There are many ways to find campgrounds either by books or researching the internet. As mentioned above, I'm not sure of route 81 but have traveled I-81 many times. If you are planning to come down I-81 and head to Asheville, then I'm assuming you are going to take I-81 to I-26. At Bristol, TN on Hwy 11E, there are several campgrounds that are pretty good. The one we like is Lakeview Campground in the Bluff City area near the racetrack. It's open all year round and clean. The website is http://lakeviewrvpark.com/. They are a Good Sams member. If you stay on Hwy 11E, it will take you to I-26.

If you plan on staying on I-81 to I-40, there is another campground in Baileyton, TN. It's right off the interestate but we haven't stayed there so whether the condition of it is - not sure.

Good luck and travel safely.

You can use Google Earth to find campgrounds , simply use the "fly to" bar to find a town along your route then use the "Find businesses " bar and type in campgrounds. Depending on how zoomed in you are all the campgrounds around the area you chose will showup which also shows you how close they are to the Interstate.
If they have a web site you can access that as well.

Here are two links for a couple books sold at Camping World. We carry these with us all the time. The first is an atlas that I've only found at Camping World. The neat thing is this atlas marks many of the campgrounds along each route. It is not all inclusive, but is a great tool for the road. The second is a fairly nice listing of campgrounds by states and cities with important information on listed campgrounds. Between the two, we usually can look at the route as we travel and find a nice campground for enroute stops as we travel.

The link in the post for RV Park Reviews (www.rvparkreviews.com) is a good resource also. We use this site a lot and subscribe to it entering reviews of places we stay.
