Slide Awnings really catching the wind

Just got or new BC 3070RE and it has the slide awning package.
The RV is setting in the drive today and the wind is howling and its catching one of the slide covers and causing it to flutter and snap up and down.
We have never had these before and wondered how much wind they can take?
My wife was cleaning inside and shut it up and said she would do it another day.
I told her that I thought they could handle any wind and be ok , but she was concerned and wanted me to get some info on them.
Thanks
Dan

That's the nature of the beast....never had a problem, except noise, until we got hit with close to an 80 mph wind...

Hi bigdob24,

We're getting 20mph winds here in Oklahoma and ours are making quite a bit of noise. That's the way they are and it's probably the only downside to having them. The flapping and noise level will vary depending on wind speed and direction relative to the slides.

If the wind is high enough to rock the RV severely, some people pull the slides in, which also gets rid of the flapping. Other than that it's just an irritating noise.

I am right next to Dan and suffering from the same winds and noise, but if the wind here was in fact 80 mph, I think I would pull in the slides if possible and seek shelter someplace more sturdy than my trailer.

Trust me...if there had been time we would have...This was a freak straight line wind that hit us broadside and only lasted a minute. Could not get the slide in quick enough before it ripped the topper off. We were in Colorado north of Denver...man they get some strange weather there!!

Well, believe or not, we've experienced 20 mph breezes in the past without my problem from
the toppers. From what I've seen of some toppers at rally's, there're not installed properly.

Kakampers....you are "right on the money" as far as our strange weather here in Colorado!!! We are the windy state!!

We pull slides in when we are expecting wind gusts above 40 mph if we are not in the RV. We have weathered some serious winds while in the rig...Valley of Fires in NM...wow...wind gusts in excess of 60mph were reported on our weather radio while we were there. I wanted to pull in the slides but DH said "no, all will be ok"...and it was:)...but I was surprised the slide covers were still attached and ok. They also held up while we were on the Texas coast and had a series of extremely windy squalls come through over several days. Ours are pretty sturdy...but I have met others who have lost a cover due to high wind:(

You got that right!

I thought about a slide topper on our trailer, but because of the winds we get here, I nixed that idea.

Matter of fact, we hardly ever put our awning out because of the winds here.

I have been in winds so strong that the awning flapping so much it was tipping the top of the slide in. That was when I closed the slide. It didn't seem to hurt anything.

You got that right!! If I lived in Colorado I would not have ordered toppers....we were staying at St. Vrain State Park when that rogue wind hit us. On that same trip on the way thru Denver in a matter of 15 minutes, we went from 70 degrees to 30, the wind started, it was raining then snowing and then HAIL! We couldn't get out Denver fast enough!!

We stayed at St. Vrain for the first time last year over the July 4th. Weekend . . . only about 20 minutes from the house so it's easy when we want to camp, but not drive too far!

Not to mention that St. Vrain is right across the street from our dealership!

We never considered this park in the 12 years that we had our old trailer and drove right by on our way up to the mountains, but now, we will probably stay there at least one campout per year!

Anyway . . . it was nice and calm and I had the awning out . . . my step son and I decided to take a bike ride around the park and while we were out, then wind kicked up!

Blew my hat off a couple of times while riding back to the site!

We hustled back to the trailer and my wife was standing there holding on to the awning as the wind was blowing directly into the awning!

Took all three of us to get it rolled back in!

Luckily, no damage!

St. Vrain was basically destroyed by the Colorado floods last fall, but they are saying on the website that they will be up and running again for the camping season!

I have already booked the July 4th. Weekend there this year!

Here are a couple shots at St. Vrain:

We had an awning experience up in the mountains once with our old trailer in the middle of the night when a thunderstorm rolled in . . . no damage to the awning but it did break the outside porch light.

We had to get up and roll the awning back in during the rain and wind.

Since that time, we never leave the awning out when we leave the trailer for a drive, or when we go in for the night.

So funny to read this thread. We just got back to the RV after having the brunch over at the casino (Choctaw in Durant, OK). We said we should look at the wind forecast. Opened up the laptop and saw this thread :)

We're a row over from Dan at it is really kicking up. We're running the ODS (west) slides in for now. We can live in the center and DS slide for now :)

Glad I got all my stuff put away yesterday from being here about a week. Be dumping the tanks after dinner tonight and stowing the sewer hose. Nothing to do tomorrow but hitch and go :)

Ditto on what everyone else said. One thing I didn't see mentioned is the awning may need to be tightened up or adjusted.

That's a definite possibility. Some that I've seen at the Goshen rallies look more like
hammocks than toppers.
