Southern Campers with 30'-40' Models--Does 1 a/c keep it cooled?

We are considering a Mallard and are told a 2nd a/c unit is not an option (it is on the North Trail, but a different layout :(). From what we can find, it appears most units sold in the south (ie: FL, TX) have 2 units. We plan on spending a decent amount of time in southern Florida.

If you camp in the heat of the south, is one a/c sufficient? Heck, if you have 2 air conditioning units, do you struggle to maintain a cooler temperature?

Hi klp605,

A 40' trailer definitely needs 2 A/C units if not 3 for the heat and humidity in south Florida or south Texas. The direct sun on the trailer, combined with high humidity, and the heat transfer through single pane windows, presents quite a challenge for air conditioners.

There's some possibility you might make 1 unit work in a 30' trailer.

Thank you for the responses. The unit we are looking at is 35.5'. Living in Florida for as long as we did, we suspected we needed 2 units. Just because a model sells in the South with only 1 unit, doesn't mean it can do its job.

Our rig is like 33 feet long and we tried it with one as that is the way it came. We picked it up in early July 2013 and in mid August 2013 we had the second A/C installed.

IF the trailer is a 30 amp system, it will come with an 13500 a/c which will struggle in the FL heat. A dehumidifier will help which we have used in our Landmark (with 2 - 15K a/cs) while in southern AL during the 104 degree temps this past summer.

We had a jayco 32 ft travel trailer and it had one 15000 BTU A/C and it did fine for the four of us camping. We live in Jacksonville FL and camped a lot June through September .months

before ordering my bighorn spent last 7 years in 32ft jayco with 15k ducted- mainly in south texas- first 2 years with only that and summers it was hard to keep unit below 80 inside during day- even without a lot of door openings- and cooking me it worse -added 2nd 13.5 unit in bedroom and no problem keeping trailer cold all day and night- would not own anything larger than 26 without 2nd ac - already contemplating possibly adding 3rd a/c to repalce ceiling fan-

2 units at minimum. 3 is better. Buy a toy hauler, you get the 3rd ac, and a bonus room!

We went from a 30' class c with one ac to our RW with three ac'c. We're now cooler in more ways than one. Lol
