The union where you screw in the check valve is leaking not the threads but on the outer surface

Don't try to unscrew the plastic check valve until you have a new brass fitting in hand. The longer the plastic ones are in place, the more fragile they become. If you're very, very lucky, you'll be able to get it out in one or two pieces.

Are you changing or just inspecting? My problem was not the hot water ck valve. The valve ended up being ok. Surprisingly the metal union was the problem. Very rusty and water was seeping through the metal.

New water heater installed. Took just about two hours.
As I stated before the leak was at the hot water out. I am thinking that when lazy days Rv in sefner Fl replaced it under warranty they didn't inspect for slow leaks as the back of the tank was extremely rusted. Good news no water damage to the floor not even a single stain.
So no I have a complete set of spare parts for my water tank. I even took the electric heating element, put it in distilled vinegar and it looks like new. Circuit board, gas valve and igniter.

This is a 3 year old electric heating element. I put it in a tall glass of distilled vinegar for two hours. Looks brand new.
