Towing BH3260 Elite with 3/4 ton Duramax

Hi, I am new to this forum and would like to ask a question about a potential new purchase of a BH 3260 Elite. I currently have a 2005 Chev 3/4 ton extended cab duramax diesel with a GVWR of 9200lbs and tow capacity of 15200. Truck weight of 6940lbs. The BH 3260 Elite has a hitch weight of 2115 and dry weight of 11180. Considering I would probably add about 1300 lbs of weigh (cargo), would I be overextending the truck as far as pin weight. Is anyone out there towing Big Horns with 3/4 ton trucks....(safely)? Am I pushing the envelope in trying to trailer a BH3260 with hitch weight of 2115 and weight of 11180? Would probably add 1350lbs cargo stuff. Thanks for your help. Thanks

Hi Harry1,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum and to the family. We have a great bunch of folks here with lots of information and all willing to share their knowledge when needed.

You will be maxed out, but lots of folks are towing with 3/4T vehicles.

I'm sure you will get more opinions soon.

Enjoy the forum.

As Jim said you are approaching the limit. Also, 1350# of "other" cargo is not a lot. We prefer the stability of the F350

Re: Towing BH3260 Elite with 3/4 ton Duramax

I just purchased a BH 3260 last month. Went to the scales on the way home, empty 12,402 and pin 2180. We are getting ready for our first trip to Pigeon Forge Tenn, leaving tomorrow. We have a 2004 F350 with DRW and know that it will be over our limit. My truck can tow 12,800, we will probably be 1000 over weight. We will weigh it when we leave tomorrow. Looks like a new truck is coming and 7000 axles.

Thanks Roger. Can you tell me what options you added to take it from the specs dry weight of 11180? That's 1200 lbs over stated dry weight. Thanks

I doubt your overweight !!!

See below, we have a 2007 same make of truck and tow the 3251 TS BC very well. We do use air bags. We are not over weight in regard to the combined trailer and truck towing capacity - trailer weighed 14,300 when we had it weighed at the Goshen rally (dry weight from factory was 12,100). Our pin weight was over but we use air bags and have no problem at all.

Prior we had a 2010 BH and had no problem towing this as well even in the mountains on the way to FL.

You will end up with a pin weight of 2506lbs (11180 + 1350) .20 Therefore truck wt 6940 + 2506 = 9446 lbs.You will exceed the GVWR of your truck.

I think the truck alone will weigh in over that 9446# ( 04 F-350 DRW)

Re: Towing BH3260 Elite with 3/4 ton Duramax

We pulled our BH for many years with an '05 truck like yours. No problems at all and I know the Horn was at its 14K GWR. Your '05 has GVWR of 22K. Will you be over your pin weight? Maybe....depends on how much weight you put forward of the axles. Air bags will help to keep your truck level when loaded....a must do. A newer GM truck with the higher weight rating, more power, 6 speed trans and exhaust brake would be ideal if you have the budget for it. Use the one you have to get your feet wet and go from there.

Hi Harry, I'm getting ready to pick up a new BC 3650 and plan to pull it with 2005 Chevy 2500HD, diesel. I've ordered Airlift Air Bags and Rickson Tires. Tires will be 22570R19.5 Commercial, G rated. I feel confident all will be fine.

I'd like to thank everyone for the feedback concerning towing the BH3260 with a 3/4 Chev. Thanks for your input.

Harry, one thing to keep in mind. Some people add all kinds of things to increase the towing capacity. But, it does not increase the posted "legal" weight it can pull.
