Thought I would share an issue we had with a truck recently. The truck run perfectly fine until the trailer was hooked up. Shortly after driving with the trailer there was a DTC code of P0087 set. This code would put the truck into a reduced power mode. The only way the truck could be operated was to have a code reader hooked up to clear the codes. We looked at all service tips. Removed fuel tank and check sock on fuel pump for blockage, it was ok. We checked the fuel lines above the transmission for kinks. Thought that may be an issue so we changed them. Problem still existed. We smoke tested the fuel system looking for air leaks, all was fine. We finally started looking at injectors. The days of diagnosing injectors by black smoke are long gone. What we found was the fuel return rate back to the tank was excessive and was causing the fuel pressure to drop. When we removed the injectors, the Pintle tips were heavily carboned. I'm suspecting the injectors were restricted causing them to by pass back to the tank. We installed 8 new injectors the truck run great. Fuel pressure readings under load were back to spec. There are lots of options out there about different fixes. Most of them are just masking the root cause.
