I get anywhere from 9-11 MPG towing my Landmark and between 15-17 unloaded freeway/highway miles.

What speed are you towing?
My Silverado HD 2500 was 11/12 mpg flat towing at around 62 mph.
I'm considering Fords year model 2014/16 F-350 or 450.

I am towing at 65-67 MPH in the 70 MPH speed zones and if it is lower speed limit than that, then I tow at the speed limit. My Landmark weighs just slightly over 18k fully loaded.

Thanks Rod. I think I'm going to be buying a Ford. Higher tow ratings. I'll be looking at 2014 year models & up.

Towing...9, otherwise, 13-15. I know the coach is 16K fully loaded for a week, and sadly, haven't weighed the truck still, but based on what I saw at scrap yard last summer, I thought scale said truck was around 9400.

Towing MPG averages 10 with the 16,000 lb. Bighorn.

Non-towing MPG is about 14 around town and 18 on the highway.

Rod,
With the Ford do you have transmission grade breaking or exhaust breaks.
Trying to compare to what I was use to with the Allison.

Both an engine brake and transmission grade breaking. I can go down some seriously steep hills and not have to touch my brakes.

Rod thanks,
I asked that question to a Ford sales person. He said no? So I thought, Tapatalk!
Appreciate the information.

There is the familiar Tow/Haul mode that works with the transmission, an exhaust brake that operates in both a "Manual" and "Automatic" mode, and also a Hill-Descent mode that works at about 20 mph or less only....the ECM adjusts the transmission, engine brake, and will also apply the wheel brakes to keep you at a crawl on any hill.

HI LBR,
Sounds like the technology has really moved forward. I've always been happy with my 05 Silverado HD Crew cab long bed, but had to let it go. I'm probably going to be a a Ford guy pretty soon. I'm looking for to a piece of mind going through the mountains next year.

Yes Carl...You will absolutely get that peace of mind. We came from a 2003 F550 XLT up until a year ago, and now have the 2017 F450 Platinum.

I could care 0% about acceleration, but put my 100% emphasis on braking and control at all times....thus the reason for my choice of the MDT F450 because of brake sizing (~1.25" larger) over the comparable LDT F350....was worth the extra $3400 to me. The old truck couldn't control our CY while decending at all!

If you do choose a MDT, it is a bit more difficult to find insurance companies that have open arms for your truck over a LDT......crazy!!

LBR,
Can you share your views on the bio diesel? I've read the specs are the same as the regular diesel. Sorry for bothering you but I have not purchased a new truck in over ten years. Wow so much has changed.lol

I'm a bit diesel fuel challenged, but try to stay away from bio-diesels unless I plan to run it thru a truck fairly quickly, such as our West Coast travels. We won't get back to use our 550 (is in storage) until next May, so stayed away from the bio-diesel when I filled up.

I do plan to change the 450 fuel filters every 15K miles.
