Battery not charging

We have a 2017 North Trail 22rbk, and all of a sudden the battery won’t charge. No fuses are blown. Cannot find the converter switch. Anyone know where that is or what other issue is causing it.

Hi Budman,

There are some 12V DC mini-circuit breakers near your battery, that are covered with a red rubber boot. One of them has a teeny-tiny reset button. When that breaker trips, the battery doesn't get recharged, but all of your interior 12V devices and lights work while on shore power. I've attached a picture.

It's also possible there's no output from the Power Converter.

Inside the trailer, you've got a test panel that shows the holding tank levels. On the right side there are 4 lights that show your DC power state. If on shore power and the Power Converter is working, you'll see 4 lights when the test button is pressed.

If the battery is depleted, and you see only 1 or 2 lights on the test panel, the Power Converter is not working. Check the main circuit breaker panel inside to ensure no breakers there have tripped. Another possibility is that the battery was momentarily hooked up in reverse polarity. That will blow the on-board fuses that protect the Power Converter.

If none of this helps, we have an owner-written 12V Block Diagram and Diagnostic guide that will step you through how to figure out what's wrong.

Tried the reset switch & battery still didn't charge. Battery looks to be a Marine battery. Would it make sense to switch to 12V deep cycle battery?

Where is the converter usually located? I
Location varies by model and floor plan. But the Power Converter is usually pretty close to the main circuit breaker panel and fuse box in the trailer. On some trailers, it's built into a "power Center" that includes fuse box, circuit breakers, and Power Converter. If you have a WFCO unit that looks like this, the Power Converter is in the lower section.

The power converter on our 2018 Cyclone 4005 was mounted behind the fireplace. You have to remove the fireplace to access it. On your model, I do not know where it is. Just because the breaker is not tripped does not mean your converter is getting power. You need to test the outlet it is plugged into just to make sure. Also on our Cyclone, the positive lead (hot, line, etc) goes to a buss bar. There is a small auto reset circuit breaker between the positive lead and the buss bar. That is something to check also if you trailer is wired like that. I hope this helps.

As an aside, the outlet our converter is plugged into is wired so one side of the outlet powers the converter while the other side is on a different breaker and powers the fireplace.

Once you locate the converter, first test the socket it is plugged into to make sure you have AC Power and if so then switch your meter to DC (if necessary) and test the output of the converter. Be careful testing as there can be high voltage and amperage involved. If there is no output from the converter and it is connected properly, it can be a fuse (there are three spade fuses). Connecting the battery cables backwards even for an instant will blow them. If not a fuse the converter is bad.
