Colorado Trip

Would like to plan a trip to Colorado next summer with the family. I have been to the Denver/Boulder area myself and did a day trip to Pikes Peak etc, but never on a camping trip. Would like some suggestions on where to stay and things we should do/see while there. I have not been since probably 85, so I am wide open to suggestions.

Anywhere in Colorado, it's all good!

Seriously, without any specific parameters to go on, I would recommend time around Rocky Mountain National Park, and or the many attractions around Colorado Springs for starters. I'd stay outside Estes Park to avoid the zoo. In Colorado Springs you can try to get reservations at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, or Mountaindale which is about 20 minutes south of town.

Want a more mountain experience? Try Gunnison, Breckenridge, Leadville! Just depends on how much time you're here. Before venturing into the mountains, I would spend a couple days along the Front Range adjusting to our altitude.

Be more specific about your itinerary (hopefully after some more suggestions), and I'll have more ideas!

If you're considering a stop in Breckenridge or any of the other very popular destinations, you need to make summer reservations VERY early. Now would be a good time to make summer reservations at Tiger Run if you want to stay there. Summer highs around 70. Kayaking, hiking, biking, jeeping, lots of local activities available.

I second that! Tiger Run is a great "home base" for a variety of activities. If you like scenic train rides, I recommend the Georgetown Loop, and the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railway in Leadville. Both easy day trips from Breck.

Thats the kind of info I need. I have only been to CO once in my life and it was a fantastic trip, hoping my kids will have the same experience. They have only ever been to the smoky mountains so really wanted to give them the ROCKY experience.

We are pretty active, love to hike, raft, ATV, offroad, zipline, you name it. So sky is the limit...

Things I did while there and want to include, Pikes Peak, Caving, Rocky Mountain Pass? (road up in the mountains), Shining Hotel, is that still there? I enjoyed Boulder as well, but don't even think my kids know who Mork and Mindy are, LOL.

I will definitely check out the spots suggested so far. Keep them coming.

This spring we were in CO, again, and took in sights south of the I70 corridor such as Great Sands Dunes NM near Alamosa, took in attractions around "the Springs" that we hadn't seen before, visited our friends in Eagle, went to Glenwood Springs, went down to the Canyon of the Ancients NM and Mesa Verde NP in the SW corner. We have also seen many other sites on previous visits. Like Skyguy says so much to see and do! We use Trip Advisor among others to seek out attractions and places to visit.

We have been to Manitou Springs for the many attractions (Pikes Peak, Seven Falls, Manitou Cliff dwellings, Cave of the Winds) but our real love of Colorado is the south west area, in and around Durango. We stayed at the Blue Spruce RV Park near Vallecito Lake but don't miss the San Juan mountains, the train ride from Durango to Silverton, the Million Dollar highway.

Depending on kids ages there is a Yogi Bear in Estes Park....which puts you close to Grand Lake, Winter Park and Steamboat Springs. Winter Park has mountain biking and alpine slide that kids my love....and boat rentals on grand lake.

X2! Durango area is really our favorite, too. We like Durango Riverside Resort, just north of Durango, on the Animas river. We've enjoyed rafting and jeeping, riding the train, biking, alpine sliding, a mine tour, a casino nearby, and more in that area.

Will check that area out as well. All my kids that will be traveling with us are teenager. They already said I can drive out and pick them up at the airport.. LOL

We spent a week at Manor RV Park in Estes Park back in August . . . had a great time!

We drove up there a couple of months before the trip to scope out the campgrounds and the Yogi Bear Park was our first choice . . . until we drove through it!

We felt that it was not well cared for . . .

Not too mention that it would be a major PITA to maneuver through the park with our 30-foot trailer.

At Manor RV Park, we had the Poudre River flowing just 30 feet from the back of our trailer . . . awesome!



Spruce Lake RV park is just across the river (and owned by the same people), and several friends have stayed there and enjoyed it as well!

As others have mentioned, Colorado has lots of places to explore, so a general idea of where in the state you want to go would be helpful

We go to Colorado every summer for a few weeks. Our favorite places include:

• Estes Park:
  • We stay at Elk Meadow RV Resort very close to the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) entrance.
  • RMNP is our most favorite National Park. Loads of stuff to day and you never get tired of the views.

• Durango:
  • Durango is an great place and very different from the eastern mountains of Colorado. We stayed at Alpen Rose RV Resort right off of Highway 550. Great place.
  • Loads to do in Durango and around it: Drive the million dollar highway up to Silverton, explore Durango, Train Ride, travel over to Mesa Verde National Park.
• Breckenridge:
  • We have stayed at Tiger Run RV Resort in Breck. Beautiful place to stay. Most things in Breck don't open until the last week of June so don't go to early you won't find many things open plus you can still get snow in early June (we did this year as we were the 2nd week of June and it was COLD!!!)

We stayed three nights at the Durango KOA . . . nice place!

Next time we go down there we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We generally don't do KOA's, but at the time of the year that we were there, they were the only place that had anything available without reservations.
