From Goshen to ????

After the Goshen Rally ends June 21[SUP]st[/SUP], I will have the summer to kill while getting home. In the past, when we would travel, DW was willing to go about a day from home, two at the most, and then she wanted to set up and stay in one place in order to see if the local Walmarts and Targets had anything different than those in our area (just kidding, not really that bad). This will be the first long trip Dolly (cocker spaniel) and I will make since DW has been watching from above.

I am thinking I would like to go from Goshen to Boulder, CO and visit a friend I haven’t seen since high school and then drop down to Albuquerque to take care of some business I need to do there in person. Then head up to Pagosa Springs for a few days and then from there to Salt Lake City for a few days. From Salt Lake I guess I will be heading back toward Central Texas (maybe a different route through CO) via Albuquerque with probably a stop in Ruidoso. I think I can be gone as long as it takes, limited only by cold weather.

I know I can get on the Interstate and shoot across from Goshen to Boulder, but I really would like some suggestions of things to see along the way. Since I think I am going to have about as much time as I will need, and this may be a onetime trip through some of this part of the country, I don’t mind bouncing up or dropping down below that line in order to see interesting or historical things along the way. I know I want to go through Springfield, and see the different Abe Lincoln sites.

I am going to use both AAA and Good Sam’s trip planning services, but figured some of you guys would be able to offer a wealth of ideas as to where to go and stay and what to see.

Thanks, I will appreciate any suggestions you might be able to give me of points of interest for this trip. I will be towing a 38’ Gateway.

Couple suggestions. Stop in Moline and tour the John Deere plant. Amazing tour. Spend the night in Amana, Iowa. Eat a chicken dinner at one of the restaurants there. Take a short side trip west of Des Moines and see the Bridges of Madison County. Stop in Grand Island and visit the Stuhr Museum.

Thanks Gary521, these are the kinds of suggestions I am looking for, I would not think to do any of that.

You could head north and check out the UP of Michigan!

Or head west and check out the Black Hills of South Dakota, badlands and Mount Rushmore, then head south to Colorado . . .

You may have to call ahead for the John Deere tour. Also, in the town of Winterset ( about where the bridges are located ) is the house where John Wayne grew up. Small house but interesting, as long as you ar there. A little out of the way, north of Moline is Dyersville, Iowa. Here you will find the "Field of Dreams" from the movie of the same name.

One more thing. Stop in South Bend, IN and visit the Studabaker museum. Very interesting. They used to make the cars here.

Missouri has a lot to offer, as it was the start of the trails heading west, Pony Express, where the early fur market was (mountain man era), and where Lewis & Clark started on the Corps of Discovery. Don't to to St. Louis much but under the St. Louis Arch is the Museum of Western Expansion, supposed to have a lot of Lewis & Clark stuff plus mountain man items. Across the state in Kansas City area, the 3 major trails heading west started (Santa Fe, California, & Oregon), North of Kansas City, in Liberty, is the site, (now a museum) of the first daylight bank robbery, by the James Gang, a few miles from there in Kearney it the James Farm where Frank & Jesse were born & raised. North of Kansas City about 25 miles is St. Joseph, where the Pony Express started & where Jesse James was killed. Both of these are also museums.

You could stop in Dubuque, Iowa for the Iowa Chapter Rally. July 10-12th.

The St. Louis, Mo Zoo is really nice and free
Madison Wisconsin Zoo is also nice and free

The John Deere Tractor works and the engine works in Waterloo offers tours. There is also the John works in Des Moines, Iowa that offers. That plant builds implements and cotton harvesters.

Galena Iowa can be an interesting antiques, shopping and dining experience also.
