Re: Heartland Rally "Cruise"?

I know Feb is a good month too....Dave and Nona are already sailing then....and I'm not going to be able to get time off in Feb when I just started the semester mid-January. Feb will be a very busy month for me.... and you know I have to go!!!

I am? Where am I going this time?? I need a social secretary!

We found it too be very clean and a lot less poverty compared to some of the other cruise stops.

Been on several cruises and the best one I liked and felt safe when we went on shore was the St Thomas Virgin Island.

Bill40, do you mean Bermuda is a great stop or were you responding to Jim and Pat? I have not been to Bermuda exclusively but have been to St. Thomas, St Maarten, and Nassau. Out of those 3 I liked St Thomas the best.

We have been on so many cruises that we have sort of lost track. Last count I think was 26...We have been on Carnival several times and enjoyed it each time. We have sailed many cruise lines and are happy with all. I guess we are easy to please....I don't think I'd pick Bermuda in November though. Just my opinion.

Yes to Jim and Pat we also liked St Thomas but Bermuda was also very nice. Got stuck going to Nassau twice, second time due to a storm. Did not care for Hi Mannn island( Jamaica ) or Cozumel.

My cousins just got off a ship today...same cruise to Bermuda...5 days...left out of NJ. I will ask them what they thought...although it's still October... Arlene and Kevin, why wouldn't you choose Bermuda in November?

Just because of weather. I have been there in October but was told it starts going downhill. Could be wrong, have never really kept track. They don't stay warm like the carribean.

Re: Heartland Rally "Cruise"?

Ok thanks! I talked to my cousins last night and they just got back on Thursday. Had a very nice time. She said to watch the excursions...some weren't as nice as others. They had a boat break down on their way to somewhere (65 of them on the boat) and they had to be rescued. But she said other than that they had a nice time...nice shopping in Bermuda and they had a tram for transportation. They were in Bermuda 2 days. Nona, Debbie and I will continue to look for viable options!! Thanks! And if ya'll have some suggestions please don't hesitate to post. Remember we would like to keep this cruise at 5 days at the maximum...

Leno I heard that too about the weather....I guess Bermuda is on the same plane as South Carolina someone told me? I don't know, got a map? That's why the weather isn't so great there in the winter....

But HEY! How 'bout that Carnival cruise.... "just sit right back and I'll tell a tale, a tale of a fateful trip" "4,500 passengers set sail that day for a one week trip... a one week trip"

Well, we ain't goin' on the Carnival. Would that be OUR luck??? No, just MY luck.

You take your chances on any cruise just like driving or flying. We were on a Royal Carribean Cruise out of San Francisco and had an engine fire. Smoke was billowing thick and black and all available hands were called to fight the fire. Intersting to watch and see how well trained the crew was. We limped into port late with a tug boat escort but no evacuation was necessary.

Yes Tom you are right... anything can happen at any time. In Carnival's favor the reports that they are doing what they can and they are reimbursing everyone for the trip and giving out new tickets. But it's too bad that they had an entire power outage instead of just some parts... everything went out. Maybe they should have more electrical rooms so when something happens in one, other services aren't affected. Let's see, what would I give up? Toilets, food, AC, lights, hmmmmm....tough decision. I guess a passenger transfer at sea to another ship was out of the question...

They rolled the dice and came up short; what are the odds that any cruise ship will have a failure while at sea? It wasn't the Titanic for goodness sake. Just think of the "sea stories" those passengers will be able to tell forever!!

and to those passengers who wouldn't take a free ticket on another ship...are you crazy??? what are the chances that would happen again? If you don't want your ticket, I'll take it!!!

And hey, they got T-shirts!!!!!

Re: Heartland Rally "Cruise"?

I believe their diesel engines power electric generators and when the engines go out, there goes the power. I'll bet this disaster at sea will be factored into future designs where by more or larger diesel generators are placed on the ships and in a location other than the engine room so some level of backup power beyond what this one had is able to be had.

I'll bet the entire electrical load on a cruise ship is astronomical. To power the entire ship on backup generators is probably not going to happen but still, I'll bet it will get better.

We've cruised a number of times and really enjoy it. Yet we've never been on Carnival. I won't let this incident stop us from using Carnival. As in the RV and other industries, things will happen. How the company handles the situation can make a huge difference on how you feel about a product or service and whether you will use it/them again.

Happy trails :)
