Hi folks,
Things are getting exciting. An old friend of mine who I placed as a Prez of a medical company many years ago called me out of the blue, and he is now the President/CEO of a spine surgical product company whose customers are all spinal surgeons. He knows many of the spinal surgeons in the US, but most important of all knows the rep on most. In the west coast, he said Dr. Watkins, and Dr. Robert Pashman of Cedars Sinai are the ones the other surgeons trust the most out here to operate on their own family if they needed it. Well, I tried to get an appointment with Dr. Pashman, and he was unavailable. Lo, and behold, buddy Tommy two tone, as I call him, spoke to Dr. Pashman and he is seeing me and my MRI's and Catscans on Tuesday for a big time consultation. I have been concerned about a 2 stage Tues/Thurs surgery as planned by Dr. Watkins, and Dr. Pashman performs the same surgery in one operation. And so the beat goes on....... Since I was referred to Dr. Watkins, he will be ****ed off if I go with the other doc. lol. My only concern is to be pain free, period, so Debbi and I will be trudging down to Santa Monica, for a second opinion. I will keep everyone informed.

I have been on heavy narcotics and pain meds since last July and really for the last 2 years, so both surgeons insisted I am drug free for 2 weeks before the surgery, so on this coming Thurs or Fri I will be entering Hemet Recovery Center, for 10 days of detoxing. They use subutex to remove the narcotics, then treat the withdrawal symptoms as they occur , and it's a small hospital setting so it should be OK. They have acupuncture, acupressure, tens units, biofeedback, jacuzzi, massage, and whatever it takes to detox the patient with respect. Mostly chronic pain people like me, so they will teach me methods how to deal with the pain, until the big time operation next month. After twisting my cardiologist's arm, I stop Plavix and aspirin, Vitamin E, fish oil, all blood thinners on Feb 1, and hope that one way or the other, I will be under the knife on Tues. Feb 8th to finally fuse my lumbar region and get my life back.

After meeting with Dr. Pashman on Tuesday, I will report what our next step is. What is really cool, is that people from all over the world come to see both of these doctors for back surgery, so if Eli Manning, and Rafael Furcal, and many highly paid athletes trust these guys, I am feeling like I can't lose, whichever way we go. Wish us luck and thanks so much everyone for all your support. Debbi said she is going to take a picture of our last Heartland Big Horn and hang it above my hospital bed for me to quit whining and set a goal to get back on the road by the end of summer with a new Cheby one ton and Landmark. Probably wishful thinking, but I gotta think positive, and go with our instincts about which is the right doctor.
I will be reporting middle of next week what will be the next chapter in our lives. My DW Debbi is a Jewish saint, lol, I have no clue how she puts up with me. She says I automatically groan getting up even if it doesn't hurt that much.

Larry, that's more great news. Things are looking up for you and Debbi every time I open this forum to see the new post about RV's. And now to get updates on how you are doing. To get a second opinion on such widely speculative surgery is great and with the best Doctor available in the USA is icing on the cake.
The detox sounds good, relaxing and the best available also. Everyone's prayers for you are being answered.
Hope to meet you and that great wife of yours, Debbi somewhere on the road, at a CG someday.

Well my friends the dye is cast. I saw the second ortho specialist today in Los Angeles, and he told me that the surgeon I have already is the best, and I should go with Dr. Robert Watkins, Marina Spinal Center. So this Friday, heading to detox for chronic pain and all those nasty pills, out in Hemet Recovery, and will be there for 10-14 days. Then on Tues Feb 8 and 10th, I will be having 2 stage anterior/posterior 360 fusion from the stomach and the back, as well as decompression of the L-3-4, which gets tight from the precious failed fusion attempt. I am getting cadaver bone, synthetic bone, my bone, bone cement, so watch out for me on Halloween, who knows where cadaver bone comes from? I will be in the hospital 5-7 days, and then home to recover. Even getting my own hospital bed lol. Sure am upset about the failed back fusion, but I am a tough guy and ready to try again as I must be a glutton for punishment. My children are amazed I am going to detox, as they know how much pain I am in, and I will have like a week without anything for the pain before the surgery. So here we go again. Time to step to the plate with a positive attitude, and hit that home run. Now is the time to pray for me folks, this is big time gory, huge 2 surgery time to rock and roll. And the beat goes on....... thank you all in advance, especially those who keep in touch with me. You people are awesome.

Poor Debbi gets to be Nurse Nightingale once again. I don't know what I would do without that hot chick. I have no clue what she saw in me 38 years ago, but I got the best of it. lol

I hear a positive tone to your post, even when you describe the hard road ahead it sounds like you are talking about an adventure that you are heading out on. That attitude is why you will get thru this. If you get a bit discouraged just come back to the Heartlanders, we will pick you back up! We will be sending prayers and positive thoughts out to you.

Good to hear Larry. It's always nice when a Dr. Tells you that you are going to the best instead of just trying to rack up another patient.

Hi everyone, the moment has come to begin my trek on the yellow brick road. I am at Admitting at Helmet Recovery Detox and Rehab. Bye bye pain drugs, and narcotics, it time to step to the plate and face the music. Two weeks here, then possiby some residential, then prepare for the fusion surgery on Feb 8 and 10.
Wish me luck and please say those prayers. Hast la Vista, baby. I'll be back.

Hi everyone and thanks for all the kind words. Now for the latest on me.....

I spent a week detoxing from Oxycodone and Xanax, which was incredibly tough, but now is in the past. Those pain meds are deadly and I am still feeling the effects of getting off them, but I have not slipped back once. Yea! I don't care what people tell you, those pain meds stay in your system for weeks, and I wouldn't recommend long term pain medications or benzos to anyone.

The countdown has begun for my 2 stage surgery for failed back fusions next Tuesday and Thursday, as through begging they moved it up a week.. I am going with the famous Dr. Robert Watkins, Orthopedist, Marina Spine Center, as the other doc said Dr. W was better at this surgery than him. That's a great recommendation, plus while in pre op I met a young man Charles Brown, who plays for the New Orleans Saints who had a successful laser surgery last week, and is already up and around, praising my surgeon as a life saver.

The surgery is called a 360 Anterior/Posterior L-4-5, L 5 S-1 fusion. Because it's a long surgery they have broken it up into 2 surgeries. On Tue Feb 1, they go into my back first and remove all the past hardware from the previous failed fusions, then flip me over like a puppy, open my stomach, move everything aside, then fuse me from the front with everything including the kitchen sink (they said it), utilizing cadaver, synthetic and my bones as fusion material. Then on Thu, Feb 3, they go into my back and decompress L-3-4, which narrowed from the last fusion, fuse me from the back, and then put in new, larger hardware. Both surgery's are 5 hours each, but as the surgeon said, when I asked him to do both surgeries at the same time, it wasn't fair to my body or their legs because these are such highly technical procedures and require great precision. Recovery is 6 months to a year, but I have to do this, as the pain is excruciating in my lower back and down my legs to my feet, and all I am taking now is Tylenol for the pain.

90 hours and counting till my life starts over again. Because I received a coronary stent on Nov. 1st, this surgery is very dangerous, but I cannot live in this pain, so I am now in God's hands. I know that I am blessed, as this week when I was praying for relief, I got it for 3 hours one evening, and spent it with my incredibly wonderful wife of 31 years, Debbi , and we held hands, listened to soft music and enjoyed each others love. It gave me and her strength to endure this agony, and also to know that I am a blessed man to have her in my life.

Well that's it for now, keep praying for me, and I will report back next month when hopefully, I am feeling better. I know I can endure the pain of the operations, as the recovery will be sweet. People keep telling me how tough I am, and what a great example I am setting for all people in pain, and it means a lot to me. My goal is to be riding high in a new 2011-12 Chevy 3500HD, and a brand new Landmark, and show that with the right mind set you can achieve your highest goals by fighting though adversity and pain. Thank you everyone for all your prayers, and uplifting words. You can't imagine how much it meant to me to have all your support. God bless, thanks again and keep praying for me.

Wow Larry, I was just wondering how you were doing with the detox.

I am so glad you got to spend some quality time with Debbi during all this. I have never been in your position but I would think that is very important right now.

Sam and I will keep you guys in our prayers-Hang in there and stay positive-you are doing great.

Larry-

I wish you all the best with the pending surgery. I think of you often when I contemplate the shoulder replacement surgery I am having done on Monday (1-31). After my surgery the doctor has prescribed oxycontin to dull the pain.
Your experience has made me sure that I will have the strength to "kick the habit" when the pain subsides.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Debbi that everything will go well.

We're scheduled to go to the Oregon Chapter Camp-out in West Fir this September and it would be great to see you there and compare notes.
