New to a trailer with a slide - is it best to store with the slides in or out? Would be interested in the advantages/ disadvantages of each option. Thanks.

Personal opinion... In

Less chance of water intrusion, top of slides won't get dirty or accumulate debris that may need cleaning off before closing slides, less roof sruface exposed to uv rays, less stress on the frames of the slides in the out position.

Its personal preference. People full time in there rigs and the slides are out most of the time. If I were leaving the rig set for long periods of time...then they would be in.

I put my slides out in early May when I park the rig on our seasonal site. They stay open until late September when we bring it back home. During winter storage (outside), they are closed unless I need to get inside for some reason. My slides all have slide toppers, so the roofs don't collect debris or have water pooling on them. I also make sure the seals/wipers are in the correct position when extended.

Thanks for all the good information. The reason that I asked:

We bought our trailer new off the lot and it was over a year old. it is in great shape although one issue I found was the top seal on the dinette slide was torn and the rubber was "sticky". After finding a minor leak with the slide closed and discovering the bad seal, the dealer had it replaced and also sealed the windows again as a good measure.
We live in South Alabama and it is very hot in the summer. I wondered if storing the slide closed in extreme heat could damage the seal.

Anybody experience a similar problem in extreme heat?
Maybe the rubber in the seal was defective or somehow it was exposed to some solvent that degraded the rubber. The roof shows no signs of any issue, so I figured that chemical exposure was not probable.

This forum is a great way to resolve problems, share ideas and information. It has already helped me with several issues. Really enjoy just reading all the information also.
