T32 Generator Question

We are taking delivery of a new 2017 Torque T32 on Saturday. We were quoted and paid for an Onan 5.5k generator. However now our dealer is running around in circles. First they told me I was getting a propane generator, then called me back and said it was plumbed for gas. Now they are saying that the opening will only accommodate a 4k generator. I told them to hold off as a 4k will be under sized and not allow us to run both A/C units. Plus the specs in all the options everywhere I have read list an Onan 5.5 generator.

Can you please provide me with the model number of the Onan generator for which the unit was pre-wired for and I assumed firebox was sized for? Is it gas or propane or can choose between which model to purchase?

Thanks for you time.

Hi Ken,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum and to the family. We have a great bunch of folks here with lots of information and all willing to share their knowledge when needed.

The forum is not watched by Heartland reps all the time so I suggest you call Heartland Customer Service, 574-262-8030 or 877-262-8032, have the VIN of the unit when you call.

Be sure and check out our Heartland Owners Club.

Enjoy the forum.

I can not speak for what the T32 was wired or prepped for but I can assure you that a gas powered generator is better than the propane ones. the propane ones use more fuel and are less efficient than the gas powered models. I also believe that the gas powered models are cheaper than the LP models. If you are going to boondock with ACs in use do not get propane as you will have to get bigger tanks or travel with spares bottles.

Thanks, I tried calling them today but they must be closed for the 4th of July holiday. I don't have a VIN yet, but I will try to get it before I call again.

The HeartlandRVS website lists the 5.5 as the standard option. I would not settle for the 4K, it just will not be enough.

Along with John S's recommendations above, as long as you have a fuel tank (toy hauler option) gasoline is the way to go. More efficient, longer run times with available onboard fuel.

I see you already found Puzzled_1's page. Send him a message. Mike is very knowledgeable when it comes to his T32 and could probably tell you right away whether the 5.5 will fit or not.

Received a prompt response from my email over the holiday weekend first thing this morning....

The model number for the generators that we use in our units is: 5.5HGJAA-1273

I also called and got the answer right at 8am and relayed to my dealer. Dealer said the 5.5k would not fit and they had the 4k in stock. Also, said it was going to take 17 hours to install. Factor rep said both the 5.5k and the 4k are the exact same physical size and should only take about 5 - 6 hours to install.

You really have to watch these dealers, they think every is dumb....

Did they offer to kiss you also????? FWIW the 7k is the exact same size as the 5.5k. Don't know about the 4k but sounds like they have a few they need to get rid of

I put the 7k fuel injected onan in mine- can run everything with no worries - same size and control panel as the 5.5 - you will regret the 4k - and the factory installed gen is cheaper than dealer will sell one for- if your not getting it factory installed- then just get gen prep - and order from norwall- with the $ you save you can pay dealer or good rv service specialist to do install if your not up for it- and prob save money still

Wait, if they said the 5.5k is too big, I think it's the same size as the 4k. When I went to install a 5.5k in my 321 with gen prep, I had to remove 2 screws and move the sheetmetal over 6 inches to squeeze the genny in as the firebox/heatsheild was set to the far right. But once in, plenty of room in there. With 2 A/C's you will need the 5.5k and, it took me only 3 hours. I did have gen prep

..another reason for having the 5.5k instead of the 4k is that the 5.5 is a 2 cylinder vs. a single on the 4k genset. The 4k genset generates more noise...
FWIW, I have the T31 and it came with the 5.5. When we were researching the Torque models, I recall the T32's had the 5.5 genset option..

Just curious, what was the cost of the 5.5 installed? I have a Torque T-285 with the generator prep and my dealer quoted $5,000.

The generator is setup for gas, not LP. I was originally told the same thing. After much work by the camping world parts people here, this is what they found. The number of the generator you want is 38578 RV Qg5500EVAP CA
