Travel ideas for NY and NM

In July we'll be traveling with a couple of RPodders somewhere in the northern part of NY state. Have visited part of the Adirondacks before we had our MPG. Just wondering if some of you have recommendations for places to stay, sights to see, etc. in that general area.

We'd also like to go to NM in early Oct. to see the big balloon race and tour around, so looking for recommendations from folks who've been to that neck of the woods.

We have stayed at Iroquois Campground in Peru. Easy access to the northway. For a few ideas of things to do...you are maybe 20 minutes from AuSable Chasm in Keeseville, and from the Port Kent ferry, which you can take over to Burlington, VT. It's only a short walk from the ferry in Vermont to the Church Street Marketplace. In the other direction, you are about 40 minutes or so from Lake Placid. If you are into hiking or biking, there are a ton of places to do both.

When in New Mexico you should stop in Carlsbad to see the caverns. Unbelievable
Would also recommend the White Sands area

Went to the balloon fiesta in 2011. It should be a must for everyones Bucket List. A truly amazing event! We were only there for the first Sat & Sun and felt we saw what it was all about. If you plan on parking in the RV area you better be making reservations now. Suggest you check it out on line to answer any questions.

Where ever you are planning to stay in Albuquerque during the balloon fiesta you should make reservations now. Also be prepared to wake up really, really, really early. NM really depends on your taste as far as things to see. Santa Fe, in and of itself, is a tourist destination with world-class restaurants, and fantastic fine art and craftsmanship. While in Albuquerque you can ride the tram up Sandia (Spanish for watermelon) Peak and take in some fantastic views, sunset is best viewing. As mentioned, White Sands and Carlsbad is a great visit. Up North, take in Taos to visit the oldest inhabited native american pueblo in the country...along with fine art and unique architecture. Into science? Visit the scientific museum in Los Alamos along with the Bandelier National Monument, another opportunity to see the lifestyle of our native american culture. Have a great trip.

Not sure of your route plans, but last year we traveled on I 40 through OK---very, very rough. If you make it to VT--consider staying in Bennington, great campground, good hiking , and typical NE town atmosphere--(we are originally from ME)

Last year we stayed at Balloon View Homes and RV Park. Five minutes from the balloon park; didn't have to get up too early to beat the traffic, park, and have a breakfast burrito before the launch.
