Big Horn 3160 36' 5th wheel Axle issues

HI, Has anyone had issues with an axle that has a mystery groove, apparently die cut, near the end of the spindle? I have a groove (discovered the first time I had the wheel bearings replaced) about 3/8th of an inch wide, about 1/4 " deep. No one seems to know how it happened. The bearings did not fail.
Any ideas? John, Minden Nevada Hamer1086@gmail.com

Hi John,

Welcome to the posting side of the Heartland Owners Forum. We have a great bunch of folks here with lots of information.

This groove your asking about.. is it around the spindle or is it from aprox where the outer bearing seats out to the end of the spindle cutting through the spindle nut threads? Are your bearing retainer nuts retained in place by a cotter pin through a castle nut?

Some axles have a groove cut and a hole also. The groove is for a locking washer for the spindle nut. Washer will have a tab to engage groove and then the outer nut is installed and then the washer will have outer tabs to bend over the flat outside area of the locking outer nut to keep it from backing off.

You can see all the different nuts and washers here.
