New 2017 super duty numbers....DROOL!!

I was just at the Texas state fair talking with the Ford factory guys about the increased bed height. Part of the reason is that the frame is 2" higher. The frame on the 17's is SUPER heavy duty. Probably 10" tall and fully boxed. I have had medium duty trucks with much less frame, they really went for it on this one.

Clearly the goal is to provide a chassis that can tow even more than the outgoing gen. Of course that started me thinking, where is this going? 40-50,000 lb. GCVW 5'ers, more?

The engineer I spoke with indicated that the frame was part of the issue but the main issue was using the f150 cab on the new frame...it necessitated raising the bed to match up the body lines....

Either way I have already seen a 4wd dually hooked to a XLR toyhauler and it was pretty **** (dang)?level in stock form using the ford hitch system...looked about same as mine with stock wheels

My lifted dually is still taller by a scoch

There may be some low riding trailers that ain't gonna be level...a 4x4 f350 srw is where it gets interesting!!..

I just went through the Ford fleet specs for the 2016 & 2017 trucks. Specifically the F350 4x4 SRW crew cab short box.

  • The 2017 load bed is 0.2 inches higher, 38.0 inches compared to 37.8 inches for the 2016.
  • The 2017 box sides are 1.1 inches higher, 21.1 compared to 20.0 for the 2016.
  • That makes the total increase for this configuration 1.3 inches.

Hopefully this can be compensated by adjusting the fifth wheel hitch or the pin box. I have not yet hooked my truck to the 3570RS, fingers crossed.

No doubting there is a bit of a size difference with the new truck.

And if the truck itself was not tall enough, the tailgate plastic trim has a bit of a "spoiler" look to it, adding an additional inch of height at the center of the tailgate.

Great pictures, really shows what we have been discussing.

The bigger question is what effect is the taller bed rails going to have with the clearance between the truck and the trailer when towing. Getting everything level could be a challenge. Easy to raise the hitch up or down much more difficult to raise the 5th wheel.

The 16 in the pictures looks like a 2 wheel drive. No 4x4 decals and the tires look like all- season. What is the 16 a 4x2 or a 4x4? I would be a larger difference if it's a 4x2.

I will try and get pics off my old phone that I took...my 15 4x4 with 4.5" lift dually next to 17 4x4 dually...same tire sizes on both..

Unloaded I was still 2" taller and loaded trailer i was 1" nose high on trailer

Also I noticed a good 3-4 inches in sag when he dropped the 3500lb pin weight on the 17...the springs tho rated for nearly 10k lbs are still soft up top...

Mine had the bags at 50psi so I only had 2" in drop

You MOST DEFINITELY need a step to get in...

The factory amp style ones on the platinum are nice as they drop lower than a std nerf bar, and retract out of the way....

Saw my first lifted 350 srw yesterday...it's easily 6" taller than a 250

2017 black F-350 DRW 4 wheel drive 17" factory tires (Michelin)
2011 white F-350 DRW 4 wheel drive 17" factory tires (General)

Lack of a "4x4" only means I took the cheesy decal off.
The FX4 package is nothing more then skid plates ($100 separate), junk fake rancho shocks and a decal)

I was impressed with how sturdy the running board was. Felt as strong-supportive as my running boards.

If anyone with a 2017 has hitched it up to the 5th wheel and can measure the distance from the ground to the top of the bed rails when the trailer is on and post the numbers. This information would help me a bunch. I going to get the Morryde IS installed but want to make sure I get the trailer height correct since I will not have a new truck before making the the trip to Indiana. I would need the following info. 2 or 4 wheel drive and the tire size on the truck.

Thanks
Steve

I wanted to post some pictures of the height difference from my 2008 GMC 4×4 with 2" drop shackles and air bags to the new 2017 F350 4×4.
For those of you that haven't see most of this on my "Project LM 365" thread

"Not much difference"

Now the Reese hitch in the GMC is about 3" lower the the B&W at it's lowest setting in the Ford.
