I'm sure there are spray on sealants that would take care of that for you if it was needed. I think that foam already has a coating.

Update 6/10/18

OK I'm going to post some pictures and a little bit of info on building the flag poles. They seem to be very popular and I keep getting Hustled into making more of them.
Hopefully this will help some of you make your own.
First off almost everything is from HOME Depot, except the flag hanger itself. She's finding them on Amazon and eBay.

I'm cutting Off 12" from the mailbox post.

I

Then I'm trimming down about 1/8" off of 2 sides of the 8" 4x4 wood post to fit inside of the Aluminum mailbox post. Then sanded the the post down to slide inside the Aluminum post easily.

I cut the base plywood 12" x 12" and screwed the wood 4x4 to the center of it.

I cut down the door mat in to a 18-1/16" x 18-1/16" square. Then cut hole in the middle for the post.

Guess I forgot to take pictures of me miter cutting the lower base boards to go around the post.

Sand and paint the base trim boards

That's the basic details,

In the past I might have cut a piece 2-3 times and it was still too short - how did you make it bigger?

LOL Dave If you measure the mat It is really 18-1/8 wide so that's how I cut the length.
