Questions on Hwy 101 - traveling from Mesa to Pismo Beach

We'd like to travel to Pismo Beach, CA but some travel on Hwy 101 is required. Is that all 2 lane? How much of a challenge would it be to to pull a 44' Bighorn (5th whl) on that road? Any feedback would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Stella2018,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum. We've got quite a few members familiar with California roads, so I expect you'll get some feedback shortly.

The 101 is a 2 lanes both directions. Are you actually talking about jumping over to HWY 1?

We live in the Bay Area and we have traveled down Pismo Beach area many of times. The only two lane part of 101 is on the northern part of the state. Actually the drive down to Pismo is enjoyable. You shouldn’t have any problems pulling with the size of your truck and trailer.

Coming from Mesa, Az they would be coming North to Pismo Beach on 101. In Redlands, I would get up on the 210 vs the 10. A stop in Palm Springs will break the trip up. Chris

1. There are a bunch of Indian Casino's in the Palm Springs area with big parking lots that make stopping easier. Some have designated overnight RV parking areas (Spotlight 29).

2. I would recommend catching the 210 in San Bernardino to skirt the L.A. basin as much as possible. The more to the center of the basin you travel, the heavier the traffic. Think about doing this off work hours. The 210 meets up with the 134 in Pasadena, which connects with the 101 in Burbank. I have heard that the 101 is now completely open again after the mudslides in the Santa Barbara area, but you can always check on California roads with the Caltrans automated phone # 800-427-7623 (800-427-ROAD).

The 101 has been open for about a week. Drove the LA basin twice and the 210 twice. Last time I drove the basin was last fall. Fallowed another Heartland owner and they took the 210. Met them on the 101! The basin is much more nerve racking.

Not sure. Still in the planning stages and are trying to figure out the best ie easiest route to get there. Would you recommend Hwy 1?

We travel over to Faria Beach which is just a mile or two north of Venture, CA. We take I-10 to San Bernardino and then pick up I-210. We stay on that until we pick up I-5 at Pasadena. We stay on I-5 just a short time and then take HWY 126 West toward Fillmore, Simi Valley and Ventura and HWY 101. You can then stay of HWY 101 or pick up HWY 1 North up to Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Beyond Santa Barbara are some beautiful cites like Solvang and Santa Maria plus more that you should see while on your way. Once at Pismo Beach you can travel to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo and also up to Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey, beautiful country to say the least.

Good luck and enjoy the views, very special!!!

Some times we stay in Info or Palm Springs or Beaumont and then pull the rest of the way over the next day, depends upon how tired I get.
Hope this was helpful. That little HWY 126 is straight and hardly anyone on it, the road was great the last time we traveled it.
