Here is our two cents on downsizing! We went from a TT to a 38' Big Horn 5th wheel, then to a 42' 5th wheel 2016 Big Horn 3875FB. We are fulltimers and living full time in the 42' 5th wheel was oh so spacious the front bath was amazing, BUT.......42' is just too big to fit into a lot of state parks as well as many other parks. We also have a motorcycle that we were towing on a swivel wheel trailer behind our 5th wheel that caused us undue stress when traveling.
We decided to trade the 42' 5th wheel for our current RV a 2017 Cyclone 3911JS which is 38' long - 11' garage 28' living space so that is a BIG DOWNSIZE from 42' of living space to 28'.
We could not be happier! It took a few months to adjust. The biggest downsize is lack of kitchen space.....but we remember that most toy haulers are for weekenders not fulltimers. We had so much room in the Big Horn kitchen. We purchased our toy hauler in April of this year and now it is the end of July and we have adjusted to 28' and it is PERFECT for us.
We still have the half bath in the garage and we have a rear patio and we spend a lot of time out there. I never in a million years would have thought the rear patio would be a good purchase but we love it. We sit out there watch TV we have so much privacy.
Lastly we have piece of mind that our Gold Wing travels in the garage when we are moving. We have spent this summer in Massachusetts workamping and enjoying riding on our days off. Come Labor Day we are heading to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont before heading south to our home RV lot in Silver Springs, FL for the winter months to recover from a busy summer. Then next spring we leave Florida behind hoping for a volunteer position in SD and more riding!
We are MUCH happier in a 38' toy hauler than a bigger 5th wheel. Who knows if we ever give up riding we may downsize again!
