Most everyone does according to the post

I'm confused. I re-read the original post, did not find the words "DD-214" or "discharge document". I did find a general "proof of service" term in several of the offers.

No photo ID was issued to the average GI who had served his/her time, and not gotten a retirement.

Do you belong to any Veteran's Organizations: VFW, American Legion, AMVETS...? Do you have a VA ID card? You can try the DD-214 but in this day & age retail establishments are protecting their bottom line.

Thanks for your service, BTW.

Doesn't anybody honor the official DD-214 discharge form?

Here in Virginia, all you need to do is show your DD-214 to the DMV and they issue you a "Veterans" card with your driver's license photo on it. It really is a nice thing to have even though I can produce my VVA, VFW, DAV and VA card. The DVM issued card has never been questioned (mostly, I think, because it also includes a photo and is State issued).

That's a great idea. More states should do this.

FYI
The County Clerks office where I live Issues a Pictured Veterans Card.
The VA Office in my county also issues a Pictured Veterans Card.
Lowes does require a pictured ID, but the store in our town will only honor the VA Pictured Medical Card, which I have.
I was told it had to have the VA Insignia on it.
The store personnel showed me the letter from the Main Office with the card pictures they accept.
They would not honor my other pictured ID'S or DD214.
Home Depot only will offer discounts on certain days, like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July etc.
I no longer shop at Home Depot because of this.
Hope this information may help in some way.

I did a Google search on "California Veterans ID Card", and got on the California Department of Veterans Affairs website and their FAQ's page. Here is the relevant answer for California veterans:

[h=5]How do I get a veteran's ID card?[/h]Your local VA Healthcare facility will issue ID cards to veterans that are enrolled in Healthcare benefits. Also, certain Veteran Service Organizations issue member ID cards.

So, you either have to be receiving Federal Veterans Healthcare benefits, or be a member of a Veterans organization to get a Veterans ID card here, in the state with the largest population.

I think I will write CalVet a letter.

. . . . . but if you have a retired ID card you can get the discount anytime (at least here in San Angelo we do). I think it is because Lowe's offers the same discount and both stores are within a quarter mile of each other.
