I would be a little hesitant about using one. I do not want to get that close to someone intent on doing me harm.........Don

Folks,

I would recommend reading up on "brandishing a firearm" so you don't get yourselves into trouble. Here's one resource.
Here's a key point:

That's the advantage of a crescent wrench. Good weight, balance, doesn't need much of a swing to do some serious damage (definite advantage, if someone reaches in a car window), and would be hard to claim it was a concealed weapon. Officer, it's just a wrench I keep handy for the occasional "adjustment". LOL

Now I've been to my share of Heartland rallies, and I would say that for the most part, we're not exactly a youthful group that would be described as being the picture of health and fitness.

So it surprises me to read so many comments from people who are ready to jump out of their trucks so they can start engaging in close combat. You might need to keep your asthma inhalers and heart meds on the dashboard next to those weapons. After battling it out you might need them. :p

This subject has many ins and outs, but the absolute best defense against these people is not to let them get you sucked into their mental illness. Do everything you can to limit the problem. If your life is threatened or your body is threatened with grievous bodily harm, then you must do what is necessary to make the perpetrator stop what he/she is doing.

One thing that is very effective is pepper spray. They make all sizes. one is about as big as a fire extinguisher, others are as small as 2 oz. This substance is very effective. But I recommend that you have your wife spray you with it so that you know that you can function with it on you. IF you become scared or immobilized because you got pepper spray on you then you become vulnerable again. So pepperspray and knowing how to use it is very effective against an adversary.

If you carry this stuff, train with it. Understand how to operate the canister, there is no time to learn on the job. But this is what the pharmacist used in the video.

I have been sprayed with this stuff in police self defense classes. Part of the training was of course how to deploy it and then we had to get a can emptied in our face. You cannot function after having been sprayed with it.

No man can function having been sprayed with it. The body's reaction to it is involuntary and no matter how hopped up your adversary is, he will go to the ground. He will just be hopped up on the ground. LOL

There are plenty of videos on YouTube that can show you haw to deply it. If you do deply it you need to hit the guy in the face with it, then follow him to the ground spraying him all the way to insure he is thoroughly sprayed in eyes ears and mouth.

I think we're making this way way too complicated in a lot of ways. My point about the baton is IF I am going to get into it with someone like that, I'd feel more comfortable doing so, baton in hand. OF COURSE it is better to avoid. OF COURSE nothing about a fight in the middle of the street strikes me as smart. OF COURSE fighting should be the very last resort. As my son used to say, DUHHHHH!! My only point is that, all things being equal, when pushed to the wall, I'm gonna be better off with it than without it. It's light, maneuverable and very effective, It's going to be a deterrent regardless of where I hit the sucker.

Re: Don't mess with Texas...

Never had this type of situation come up, yet! Hope to never have it come either! There is a country song that comes to mind "I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was!" I don't ask for trouble and would much rather talk my way out of it if I can. However, I was trained by the best and know if backed into a corner I'm going to give a good account of myself. If I start, I will not stop until me and mine are safe. Never but never threaten an old dog, just not smart! Anyhow, hope all is well and that you never run into someone like that again. You never know what that other person might be on or have hidden. Meth heads can really do some damage because they don't know enough to feel pain and that is dangerous. Take care, enjoy and be safe out there!
