Campfires

All of the sites at our CG have fire rings (actually truck tire rims). The CG sells firewood, as do several local places. I do bring scrap wood (hardwoods) from my home shop for kindling. My biggest peeve is where the clowns think they're garbage disposal fires and toss paper, cardboard, and plastic into them. And don't bother to check wind conditions. I maintain our fires to a flame height of no more than 18 - 24" from the ground. Plenty cozy and it's out before we go in.

Which is worse, sitting around a campfire enjoying the ambience or sitting in a cigarette smoke filled Casino playing the slots? I will take the campfire anytime. (although we enjoy the slots just hate the smoke). We have a portable campfire pit that has a lid on it so when you are finished with the fire you put the lid on it to smother the fire and control the smoke. Works great and prevents fire danger. It also has a protective spark grate that goes around it and the lid on top. Allows the fire to burn but prevents spark danger. We love it and it is portable too.

Face it - people complain - every subject, every topic - the "best" ideas are only accepted by half the population.
They have a word for it - selfish.... "My way" is the best way...

My Definition of an egotist = "An egotist is someone who thinks more about themselves than they do of me"

It seems more and more private campgrounds and some state and national parks have banned wood fires at your site. I would say at least half of the places we have stayed in the past year have not allowed fires mostly due to fire danger.Sometimes propane fires are allowed
Sometimes there will be one fire pit at a central location in the park, if a person choses to have a fire. Trace

The standing joke at our fire growing up was when the smoke got to bad was ...go get the left handed smoke shifter!!! Same line as a can of Polk dotted paint!!

Ray, since I was a kid, not only my parents but other adults always told us kids that if you play in the campfire you will wet the bed. I thought everybody told their kids that.

In my family it was "If you play with matches..."

There are so many places around here that don't allow you to bring in your own wood. I bought one of those Lil Red Campfires that runs on propane. Thought it was pretty hokey and small the first time I used it, but after getting used to it we think it's pretty nice. A big wood campfire is nicer but the smoke always seems to follow me..Don

We use a Lil Red when conditions warrant it. And you can roast marshmallows over it.

And if you really need to add to the effect, drop some small twigs in. You will get some campfire smoke and a bit of crackling to go with the quiet flow of propane.

I had bought campfire wood several years ago somewhere here on the east coast (i think Watkins Glen KOA) and the label inside was from an Arizona location firewood seller.

A lot of you know that Reta has asthma and that campfire smoke bothers her. If she chooses to try to sit around one for a while to enjoy the company and the smoke starts to bother her, she will quietly exit stage left and go to our coach. She makes no complaint. Just goes. That works. No fuss. No muss. I enjoy them and stay.

Sad to admit, I never heard that. Actually I didn't start camping till Boy Scouts. My parents never camped:(. We told our kids, "That's fire, it's HOT"! They caught on pretty fast. I do remember the saying, play with fire and you'll get burned.

My mother told us the Play with fire and you wet the bed and play with fire and you get burned.

My mom told me that if I played with fire I would wet the bed. My dad told me if I played with fire he would beat my @$$ off! Mom also told me something about peeing in the road and getting a sty in my eye?????

The whole thread subject goes right to the problem with our society at large. I was raised that if you had a problem, it was your problem and that's the way the Lord dealt the cards to you. My sister had/has asthma when we were growing up and my parents kept the burden of making sure she was away from thing that would make her sick and I don't remember it ever being an issue. It was never a burden to anyone else and my dad sure would not have ask anyone to put out a campfire. His view was this is our problem to deal with, not some stranger that is just trying to have a good time and relax with his friends and family.

That's what my father tought me and my grandfather him. JMHO

Rex,
Same thing my parents taught me. I try teaching my kids that way too but the politically correct world makes it hard.
Also my dad didn't beat my entire *** off. I still have some of it left.

or the electrician line " go to the truck and get me the cable stretcher"
or the carpenter asking for the "board stretcher" immediately after saying " Dam I've cut this three times and it's still too short:

but on the fire question - I love propane for the convenience but it is no substitute for a good old wood fire. I normally do not make reservations at a CG unless they have Fire Rings at each camp site. now if there is a restriction due to fire conditions - well I understand and comply always.

Yes a good wood fire crackling can't be substituted.

We have the Lil' Red Campfire for use when appropriate. A couple of twigs thown in now and then will give you some crackle and the unmistakable odor. And - you can cook marshmellows over it.
